COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
The Sturgis Community Development
Department houses the Building, Planning, Zoning and Housing
Departments. The goal of the Community Development Department
is to implement the City's various codes and ordinances
in relation to construction and building needs, as well
as todirect efforts to further homeownership opportunities.
BUILDING
The Building Department functions to implement
local building codes and review site plans. It has the
responsibility of issuing permits to homeowners and contractors
as well as conducting inspections to make sure existing
ordinances and local building codes are being complied
with. Plumbing, electrical, and mechanical inspections
are done by state inspectors. While the Community Development
Office can not perform these inspections, application
forms are available in the office. |

PLANNING
The City of Sturgis is dedicated to guiding public and private
development efforts. The Planning Department is responsible
for administering City ordinances and directing growth and development
of land in relation to local zoning ordinances. The Planning
Department works closely with the City's Planning Board in directing
these efforts.
PROPERTY MAINTENANCE
In accordance with the Property Maintenance Ordinance #97, Chapter
153, the Community Development Department has the responsibility
to register, inspect and monitor conditions of all residential
rental units within the City of Sturgis. All rental units are
registered and inspected every two years.
ZONING
Zoning districts are established to promote compatible patterns
of land use within the city limits. Zoning districts exist for
residential, office, retail and industrial uses. The Zoning
Department has the duty of implementing the City's zoning ordinances,
reviewing land rezoning requests, and overseeing specific land
use requests.
HOUSING
The goal of the Housing Department is to make affordable, homeownership
opportunities available to residents of all income levels. The
Housing Department is responsible for carrying out the City's
various housing programs. The Housing Department works closely
with the Sturgis Neighborhood Program and actively researches
grant funding opportunities to further its efforts.
