ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
The City Engineers
Office is primarily a service agency. We provide engineering
services related to the design, construction and maintenance
of City-owned Infrastructure. This infrastructure includes:
sanitary sewers, pumping stations, storm sewers, watermains,
wells, water tower, streets, sidewalks and other facilities.
We also provide other technically related services upon
request from the City Manager, other City departments,
and other governmental agencies.

The following are some of the services we provide.
- Investigation of and response to complaints or concerns
from citizens.
- Water services and sanitary sewer laterals: Review and
issue connection permits. Inspect construction. Record installation
in office records.
- Right-of-way construction permits: Review and issue permits
for construction within the City street rights- of-way.
This would include drive approaches (between the street
and the property line), utilities, sidewalks and any other
work in the street right-of-way. Inspect construction.
- Assist Traffic Engineer/Public Safety Director with responsibility
for all traffic control devices on City streets. These include:
traffic signals, regulatory signs (stop, yield, speed, parking,
etc.), warning signs and pavement markings. Place and maintain
traffic recorder/classifier at selected locations in the
City to record traffic volumes, speeds and other traffic
characteristics.
- Preparation of plans and specifications for civil engineering
projects related to sanitary sewers, pumping stations, storm
sewers, watermains, wells, water tower, streets, sidewalks
and other facilities. Inspect construction.
- Review of private development plans for compliance with
City codes and good engineering practice.
- Engineering services to other departments for the design
and construction of City facilities as requested.
- MISS DIG: This is a State mandated one-call
system for the location and staking of underground facilities
prior to excavation. A party wanting to excavate in Michigan
calls one number (1-800-482-7171) at least three working
days in advance. The City receives an email with the appropriate
information. We field locate and stake underground City
facilities (sewers, watermains and electric lines) as a
service to the Public Services and Electric Departments.
- Monitor the work of engineering consultants. Assist other
departments with the selection of technical consultants
upon request.
- Assist the City Manager in the preparation of property
transfer agreements. Maintain records of annexations and
property transfers.
- Oversee City Hall maintenance activities.
- Maintain and update City master utility maps and other
City maps.
