THE STORY OF STURGIS: FROM PAST TO PRESENT
After discovering that the fertile lands really did exist, John
Sturgis purchased a parcel of land that is known today as Fawn
River. He built his cabin on what is now the southeast corner
of Pioneer Street and U.S. 12.
The St. Joseph County government was formed in October of 1829,
with John Sturgis appointed as a County Court Justice. Around
1830, Michigan's leader, Governor Cass, visited the area in
attendance of a Native American treaty pow-wow. On Cass's way
back to Detroit, Judge Sturgis saw Cass and his attendees and
invited them to dinner. At dinner, Mrs. Sturgis served the Governor
wheat biscuits. When Cass was left with the task of naming the
settlement where Judge Sturgis and his family resided, he is
said to have been so impressed by Mrs. Sturgis' biscuits that
he suggested the name of Sturgis.
On January 31, 1896, Sturgis became incorporated as a City.
The City of Sturgis is the largest city in St. Joseph County.
The City's economy has a strong emphasis on industry, with a
wide array of products being produced, including plastics injection
molding, auto-parts manufacturing, tool and die, hospital dietary
products, and metal fabrication.
